A period is the result of a natural process in the female body that occurs when a woman ovulates. It is also referred to as a menstrual cycle. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens and, if an egg is not fertilized, it will be shed through the vagina. This is referred to as menstruation or a period. A period typically lasts anywhere from three to five days, although some women experience longer or shorter periods. A period can be accompanied by a variety of physical and emotional symptoms, such as cramping, headaches, mood swings, and fatigue.
